LOOKING BACK, LOOKING FORWARD

September 18th – 21st, 2005

The RAI and its audio-visual activities

The Royal Anthropological Institute (RAI), London (UK) is the world’s longest established scholarly association (1843) dedicated to the furtherance of anthropology (the study of humankind) in its broadest and most inclusive sense. It has a particular commitment to promoting the public understanding of anthropology, and the contribution of anthropology to public affairs. The RAI publishes journals (Anthropology Today, Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute; circulating throughout the world, with about 70% of subscriptions from outside the UK), contributes to the Library of the Centre for Anthropology at the British Museum (launching the Anthropological Index On-line in 1997), has a film and video library and extensive photographic and manuscript & archive collections, gives awards for outstanding scholarship, organises lectures, meetings and manages a number of trust funds for research.

The RAI Film Committee composed of international acknowledged British filmmakers and University teachers of Visual Anthropology supports the RAI film activities, and selects films for the Library and an International Video Distribution Services. The RAI holds one of the most comprehensive film and video archives of the world (around 150 films and 150 videos).

Since the mid-1980s the RAI has been running an international video sales service of about 200 selected titles aimed for teaching. The biennial RAI International Festival of Ethnographic Film is the major market platform for international and British films of its kind in the UK.

The Institute is a non-profit-making registered charity.
