Central and South American films on Thursday 23th, Friday 24th and Saturday 25th June 2011

Spread across four days of the festival is a selection of films which look in to the diverse culture of Central and South American Communities.

The films which will be screened cover a variety of subjects which affect Central and South American communities today, including; women’s rights campaigns, religious persecution, indigenous and urban culture, traditional festivals, historical views of slavery and modern day racism.

Dreams and Sacrifices – A film about the pilgrimage site of the Lord of Qoyllur Rit’I, 4700 meters up in the mountains. It shows the significance of making this dangerous and physically demanding pilgrimage and the sacrifices the pilgrims make to fulfill their dreams.
Reflection – The story of a remarkable elderly Italian Jew who fled Nazi Europe to make her home in Ecuador. Filmed in what was to be her last year, it focuses on how she gives life to her many pasts through the objects she touches and the images that haunt her.
The House of the Dead – A film about hospital-jails for the insane in Brazil, focusing on suicide within these institutions.

Guests of Space – Exploring the encounter between the Nukak Maku people and the white man in 1988. Known as the last nomads to be contacted in South America, this film observes the collision of two alien worlds where settlers, missionaries, armed groups and Colombia’s drug war unexpectedly meet and confront.
Memories for Sale – Following Carlos, an enthusiastic tour guide who offers tours into indigenous people’s houses and families in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas.
Memories on the Edge of Oblivion – Looking at the hidden history of the slave trade in Rio de Janeiro and its impact on modern society.
Saudade Brazilian Tales of Longing – In this film, we go on a journey to explore the Brazilian meaning of Saudade, a feeling that describes longing and nostalgia.
The Voice of the Mapuche – A film which focuses on maintaining the Mapuche identity as a people, and stopping the encroachment of multinational corporations in Mapuche ancestral territory

Golden Scars – An intimate portrait of the realities facing young musicians in Cuba, offering an exclusive look into the unique stories of two young rappers born in Santiago de Cuba.
Secrets of the Tribe – The film lays out the events, the egos and the arguments and explores the legacy of the anthropologists as told by the Yanomamo themselves, the subject of the Fierce People.
The Jungle Radio – Looking into women’s rights in Nicaragua. A radio station’s focus to name and shame local men who abuse their wives and children on air.
