This is a visual anthropology film set in the oldest red light district: Kolkata, India. Despair / Hope follows the young life of Puja, who has a very difficult relationship with her mother. Her mother is a prostitute and would often leave Puja to her own devices whilst she was working. Puja’s life has gone off the rails. She was befriended by a young prostitute and became exposed to men who wanted to have sex with her. However, there is some hope in Puja’s life, offering the chance to change her life around.
