In the U.S., in the wake of what became known as the “Fierce Controversy,” a kind of war broke out among anthropologists bitterly divided into pro- and anti-Chagnon camps. The film lays out the events, the egos and the arguments and explores the legacy of the anthropologists as told by the Yanomamo themselves. The film weaves interviews with the main protagonists, including Patrick Tierney, Napoleon Chagnon, and Kenneth Good with archive footage from Chagnon’s expeditions to the Amazon, including never-before-seen outtakes secured from the Smithsonian collection. In addition to providing a character study of Chagnon, the documentary examines the divisions between the different factions of anthropology, explores the ethics of fieldwork, and questions whether anthropology can exist as a science.
