East Greenland (3500 inhabitants) has the highest suicide rate among young people, 20 out of every 1000 inhabitants with 25 percent of women and 17 percent of men in that age group attempting suicide. According to experts all explanations point to the destruction of old ways of life forcing this population to deal with this new “coerced sedentarisation” that often brings “adverse childhood experiences”. Suicidal thoughts occur more often in young people who grew up in homes with a poor emotional environment, alcohol problems, violence, physical and sexual abuse. As a result, young people are unable to deal with current and future stressors such as poverty, substance abuse and relationship difficulties.
